Arizona immigration suits pile up

Want to sue Arizona? Get in line.

The state’s new law cracking down on illegal immigration has provoked a flurry of litigation from Hispanic and civil rights groups.

In an effort to rally their bases — and most likely raise their profiles and donations at the same time — some two dozen organizations have either filed lawsuits or joined them, challenging the constitutionality of the new Arizona law that requires police to seek the immigration status of people they suspect are in the country illegally.

But the legal assault appears disorganized and disjointed, often producing a muddle of messages as groups try to carve out their own pieces of the immigration fight.
